Who we are
Ndiyo Biosciences Limited is a pioneering biomedical company dedicated to transforming healthcare through diagnostic research, local manufacturing, and innovative health solutions. Founded in 2021 by visionary immunologists Prof. Moses Joloba, Dr. David Patrick Kateete, and Dr. Benard Bagaya, Ndiyo was established to address Africa’s diagnostic challenges by developing locally produced, high-quality, and affordable diagnostic tools.
Inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, the founders recognized the urgent need for self-reliance in diagnostics. While Uganda had the expertise to conduct tests, the country was dependent on imported test kits, which were often unavailable. This challenge sparked the vision for Ndiyo—to capitalize on local resources and expertise to manufacture diagnostic solutions tailored to the African healthcare landscape.

Assoc. Prof. David Patrick Kateete
Director
DVM Veterinary Medicine, MS Molecular Biology, PhD Molecular Medical Microbiology, Other training Medicinal Enzymology, Other training Vaccinology, Other training Statistical Genetics & Genomics Other training Visiting Scholar (Bioinformatics), Fellow 12/2015 Microbial Genomics, Bioinformatics, Fellow 07/2015 Molecular Cell Biology (CRISPR, BioID), Fellow 09/2018 Genomics / Bioinformatics
I am a locally trained infectious diseases researcher with vast experience in bioinformatics and molecular biology with exposure to state-of-the-art research laboratories across borders. I am the current Dean of the School of Biomedical Sciences and former Chair of the Dept. of Immunology & Molecular Biology at Makerere College of Health Sciences. I am particularly interested in research that aims to build research capacity in tertiary institutions in Africa. I participated in the Africa CDC- NIMS project under Medical and Molecular Laboratories-Landsat ICT solutions (MML/LICTs) and I am co-PI on three NIH funded Training programs focusing on expanding capacity in data science-related fields, the Makerere University Data Science Research Training to Strengthen Evidence-Based Health Innovation, Intervention and Policy (MakDARTA) program, the Nurturing Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Capacity in Africa (BRecA) Program and the Harnessing health data science for new insights on transmission and treatment response (DS-IAFRICA-TB) Program, all at Makerere University. Additionally, I have been a co-investigator and Steering Committee member on two H3Africa-supported training projects at Makerere University –CAfGEN & IBRH3AU, where I advise on molecular and genomic-related activities. Since joining Makerere University in 2006, I have played a leading role in biomedical sciences research, training, and education, with a focus on HIV/AIDS and related illnesses, especially tuberculosis and community/hospital-acquired infections. Although my primary research and education interests are in infection biology, I have significantly contributed to bridging of the gap between laboratory-based and clinical/public health research, and in strengthening capacity for basic and operational research in Uganda. I transitioned my interests to genomics through a Fogarty Scholarship at the University of Georgia, Athens United States to study genomic approaches for investigating HIV-associated tuberculosis in Uganda. This experience provides me with the necessary expertise to execute the activities of the proposed grant.

Dr. Bagaya Sentalo Bernard
Director
PhD in Molecular Virology, Master of Science in Molecular Biology and Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Technology
I have been lucky to amass an enviable set of technical skills and expertise in Basic Sciences Research Clinical Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Trials, and Academia; all supported by a firm management experience. I have robust laboratory expertise in Immunology, Virology, and Molecular Biology earned through my 4-year AITRP-Fogarty PhD fellowship training and during the 6 years working at Makerere University-Walter Reed Project (MUWRP), My academic experience as a Lecturer in Makerere University, sums to over 7 years, but goes beyond 10 years when other tertiary institutions are considered. My double position as Lab Director/ Deputy Executive Director, and a one-year experience as Executive Director at UVRI-IAVI HIV Vaccine Program, Entebbe-Uganda built my finance and general management skills. My career goal is to use the experience and expertise so far earned to become an independent prolific and internationally recognized clinical laboratory scientist and translational scientist using basic science research to improve the everyday health of every life in a low-resource country.
