National Biobank & Biocontainment Facility

Overview

Uganda has historically relied on imported diagnostic kits for disease detection, leading to high costs, supply chain vulnerabilities, and limited access to critical diagnostics. The PCR and Antibody Diagnostic Kit Project was initiated to establish local manufacturing of molecular and serology-based diagnostic kits to strengthen the country’s healthcare system, support local biotechnology innovation, and contribute to the pathogen economy.

Why Uganda Needs a National Biobank

Uganda lacks a state-of-the-art biobank to store and manage infectious disease specimens and diagnostic samples for research, vaccine development, and epidemic response. The Biobank & Biocontainment Facility Project will establish a secure, internationally accredited biospecimen repository to support public health, biomedical research, and disease surveillance.

Project Goals:

  • Develop Uganda’s first biobank facility for long-term storage of disease samples.
  • Improve public health preparedness by ensuring access to well-annotated biological specimens.
  • Improve public health preparedness by ensuring access to well-annotated biological specimens.
  • Enhance Uganda’s biotechnology ecosystem through local and international collaborations.

Key Achievements:

  • Namigavu site secured, leasehold certificate processing initiated.
  • Drafted proposal for Uganda’s first bio-containment and biobank facility.
  • Replenished COVID-19 biospecimen stocks for ongoing research.
  • Developed reference panels for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
  • Engaged with UNBS, NDA, and NEMA for facility certification.
  • Built international partnerships with Cuban scientists for training and knowledge exchange.

Why This Matters for Uganda’s Biotech & Research Industry

Strengthens Uganda’s disease surveillance & epidemic response.

  • Provides reliable biospecimen storage for researchers & public health institutions.
  • Accelerates vaccine & diagnostic development in Uganda.
  • Attracts global investment into Uganda’s biomedical research sector.
