A major leap forward for Uganda’s scientific and economic future is visibly taking shape in Nakasongola District. The Uganda Biosciences Park in Katuugo is rapidly progressing, positioning itself as the nation’s future hub for biotechnology, advanced diagnostics, and life sciences innovation.

This transformative initiative is built on a powerful public-private collaboration. The project is led by Ndiyo Biosciences Limited, which has contracted the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) to manage the on-ground construction. The entire endeavor is championed and sponsored by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation – Office of the President (STI-OP). This national effort has also received vital local backing, with the Nakasongola Local Government and the LC5 Chairperson’s office playing an instrumental role in facilitating the park’s establishment.

At the heart of this development is a state-of-the-art PCR and Antibody Diagnostics Kit Factory. This facility is being constructed to meet stringent international Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), a move set to fundamentally boost Uganda’s domestic capacity for diagnostic manufacturing and biomedical research.

Rapid Construction Progress

The pace of development on-site has been remarkable. Having moved far beyond the initial groundwork, the project is now at an advanced stage.

Recent site photos show that the main multi-story superstructure of the factory is now complete. The concrete framework, spanning multiple floors, is firmly in place. The entire building is currently enveloped in scaffolding, indicating that the project is transitioning from structural work to the complex phases of exterior and interior finishing. This substantial progress underscores the project team’s commitment to timely execution.

Building a National Talent Pipeline

The park’s completion will ignite a significant demand for a new generation of skilled professionals. This creates a powerful synergy with Uganda’s academic institutions. Universities such as Makerere, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Busitema, and Gulu are well-positioned to supply graduates in high-demand fields like biotechnology, molecular biology, and biomedical sciences.

Simultaneously, the park presents a major opportunity for technical and vocational institutions, especially those in the Nakasongola region. These schools can align their training programs to provide the essential, practical skills needed for the park’s operations, including laboratory technology, advanced equipment maintenance, and production processes. This two-pronged approach ensures a robust talent pipeline—from researchers to technicians—creating new employment pathways and supporting local communities.

The Uganda Biosciences Park is more than just national infrastructure; it is a foundational investment in a more self-reliant and innovation-driven scientific future for Uganda.

Workforce and Sector Alignment
The emergence of the Uganda Biosciences Park is expected to significantly increase demand for professionals skilled in biosciences disciplines. Institutions such as Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Busitema University, and Gulu University are well-positioned to produce graduates in fields including biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, biomedical sciences, agriculture, and environmental science—ensuring a pipeline of talent ready to support the sector’s growth.

In addition, technical and vocational institutions across the country—and particularly those in Nakasongola District—stand to benefit substantially from this initiative. These schools can align their training programs with the practical skills needed to support the

park’s activities, including laboratory technology, equipment maintenance, production processes, and facility management. This opens up new employment and apprenticeship opportunities for students and local communities.

The Uganda Biosciences Park stands as a milestone in national infrastructure and an exciting step toward a more self-reliant and innovation-driven scientific future for Uganda.
